Somewhere in the Annapolis Valley in the late 1800s, young
Tommy is dreaming of a new pair of block skates. In winter, he watches while his
friends and siblings play and skate on the frozen pond. Being the youngest in
his family, he has to wait to have a pair of skates for his very own. This being
the age of bartering, and the age of the local blacksmith, Tommy’s father strikes
a deal with the blacksmith, Claude Smith: new fence posts in exchange for a pair
of block skates for Tommy.

With attention to historical accuracy and detail,
the beautiful illustrations of David Preston Smith take readers step-by-step through
the process of how these old-fashioned skates are made, all against the backdrop
of the Annapolis Valley in seasonal change. Tommy gets his new block skates-just
in time for winter!
